While watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off this weekend, two things occurred to me:

1. It’s still just as good a movie as when I watched it the first time in 1986

2. 2018 will look a lot like this!

If you haven’t watched it recently (or at all – don’t say you haven’t seen it at all, please don’t say that..) get it prepped on your TV, throw on your dressing gown, lick your palms (Ferris’s advice for faking an illness) sit back, laugh and enjoy. But hey, I’m not condoning truancy – so you don’t have to ‘chuck a sicky’ – as it’s known at home, in fact I’d suggest you sit up in class, pay attention and take some style notes for a few of this year and next’s hot trends.

There’s some excellent print mixing from both Ferris and his Mom; some stripes, plaid and patches involved and even a beret, but for most of the movie Ferris is wearing a patterned vest (actually music notes, but it looks like animal print at first glance) a plain t-shirt, Rayban Wayfarers and a BOMBER JACKET which is where we will start.

Stuart Vevers at Coach 1941 has been working the bomber jacket into his ready to wear collections for a couple of seasons and it’s a shape he’s sticking with for 2018 too. Also known as the Varsity, or baseball jacket, it’s an accessible shape and a pretty safe way to work an athletic style with a touch of urban chic into your wardrobe because you can wear it as you would a biker jacket; over dresses, with your jeans, or do some colour blocking with a lightweight silky one, worn as a blouse. Originally an American leather goods brand, you can always expect a great hide jacket from Coach (shearling & biker styles withstanding) but as well as leather there are suede, satin, and velvet versions to choose from, with animal prints, block colours, applique garage and car patches and buckles to choose from, all thrown together with a cool-girl capsule collection of pretty print dresses, plaid and edgy leather minis, eighties style chain belts and hats and biker boots; definitely a collection to covet and be inspired by.

Ferris Resort 2018

Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli has put a grown up, luxurious twist on streetwear too, with buttery soft leather and satin Varsity jackets, teamed with silk pleat skirts (both razor edge and wide folds), sports socks and sandals for his Resort 2018 collection.

Just roll out of bed, belt up your robe like a trench coat, slip on some shoes and hit the street! Well, OK there’s a bit more to it than that, but loungewear as outerwear is still a strong trend and the ultimate in elegant comfort and luxurious louche has to be the dressing gown. There are designer variations on the kimono, the silk dressing gown, and the smoking jacket, and the high street is eventually catching up, but now that Balenciaga and Gucci have decreed it, the day draws closer where we can legitimately strut into work wearing a bathrobe!

When preppy girl Sloan sees the school nurse enter the classroom, that’s her cue to slide on her white, fringed leather jacket, and get ready to make her escape. The culottes I can still live without, but I remember how badly I wanted that jacket, it was love at first sight and (to my joy) on the runways this year, we’ve seen cowboy boots, stetsons, parson’s hats, bolo ties, buckles, button downs and fringing – a whole load of fringing – from Alexander Wang with edgy black leather (see that killer khaki parka below for details) and white fringed ankle boots; piped cowboy shirts and stetsons from Missoni Spring 2017 menswear, to mention but two and there’s a new sheriff in town and her name is Maria Grazia Chiuri, at Dior! True Grit – meets Ralph Lauren – meets Hollywood glamour, Lascaux style animal paintings, tarot card applique, Tina Turner worthy sparkling tassels and yes, suede fringed jackets… Yep, J’adore Western Style Dior.

Clockwise from top left: Luxury fringing from Dior; Trimmed moto jacket from Coach; White leather from Everly; Kendal Jenner’s western belt and Alexander Wang’s parka.

Then there’s big sister Jeannie with her high waisted jeans and braces, blush pink blouson jacket and glossy head of curls. With its handful of buttons and applique patches, Jeannie’s jacket would be pretty cool right now and reminds me of the Oliver Spencer men’s 2018 Spring jacket and the ASOS satin bomber jacket in the collage below. Red is going to be hot hot hot for Fall, but pink is here to stay too, with Fendi, Ports, Maggie Marilyn and Valentino featuring candy pinks in their resort and Spring collections, accessorised with SPORT SOCKS, and flashes of red and yellow.

But it’s the curly bangs that I’d like the most. I’m pinning styles like mad on my pinterest board, but working up the courage to chop off a few inches comes next…
